Bioluminescent Jellyfish - What Is Green Fluorescence?
Chemicals extracted from bioluminescent animals are opening up a whole new world of cell biology. Benadette Kufari is working on treatments for cancer by using chemicals taken from creatures that glow. She adds the luciferase enzyme to a cancer cell in a mouse, so that just like in a firefly, the cell will light up when oxygen and luciferan are added. It also lets her see whether the cancer starts to shrink when it's treated with medicine.
