Robert Peery's Expedition to the North Pole

In 1905, Peery set off in a specially built ship, the SS Roosevelt. He sailed to the northern part of Ellsmere Island and then set off with dog sleds across the ice from around 83 degrees North. A big storm came along, caused his expedition party to become separated from one another - so he had to give up on plans to reach the pole this time around. Instead, he got some other exploring and navigation and charting done,. Then, next year, 1908, he was off again. On the SS Roosevelt, his eighth Arctic trip back to EllsmERE Island, set off in February for a trek across the ice to the pole. There were just six people
