Your mind's status is the most powerful extrinsic motivator for a lot of us. Status keeps people working longer as you're striving for the next rung on the career ladder. I don't think it's inherently a problem that we have these extrinsic markers of success, but I think their risk is when we are motivated by them and not having to consider what we ourselves value.
