i was a year younger than everybody else, and i was at top, on the top of the form. Intellectually, i was very clever, not in all sorts of other ways. Because it was a high powered girls school, i think all the teachers and my parents were absolutely delighted that they had a girla age girl who could succeed. And i also steered in to studying science, without anybody including me, seriously questioning whether that was what i actually wanted to do. But i am far happier now that i'm i've undertaken historical subject and i'm ore on a sort of art side. I don't think it was really until my forties or fifty that i started feeling...

Patricia Fara is a historian of science at Cambridge University and well-known for her writings on women in science. Her forthcoming book, Life After Gravity: Isaac Newton's London Career, details the life of the titan of the so-called Scientific Revolution after his famous (though perhaps mythological) discovery under the apple tree. Her work emphasizes science as a long, continuous process composed of incremental contributions–in which women throughout history have taken a crucial part–rather than the sole province of a few monolithic innovators.
