Cloud computing is a big source of carbon emissions, according to Dr Emma Fitzgerald from Lund University in Sweden. She explains that it's not only the servers themselves which are using lots of energy, but also the systems needed to keep them running. Not only do they need cooling systems, data centers need to have secondary energy systems in case there's a power failure and these generators are often run on diesel.
