The author's mother was always more of the conservative type, you know, stick your money in the bank by CDs kind of mentality. She agreed to let him start with a small brokerage account that she had inherited and didn't do anything with. So he started putting some of his money into it after showing her what he'd been working on in high school. He says: "I would see something and think to myself, okay, everybody has one of these who makes it or everybody's selling one of these"
