The Diversity of Bat Social Structures

Most bats, I have to say, only have one pup per litter and most of them only have one litter per year. There are species that live in quasi-monogamous pairs. They are harem structures where one male is defending several females. These core social units can then be part of larger aggregations. If you think about a very famous bat colony in the US, Brecken Cave in Austin in Texas, that's over 20 million bats.
