What's Happened to the Airplane?

The plane kept linking with satellites until 819 AM. Where was the plane during that period? That's the biggest question and it's so creepy to me. If searchers had started out in the Indian Ocean, they might have had a better chance of finding survivors or at the very least wreckage on the ocean surface that might point towards a crash site.
