The use of arable land was assigned to a family on a long-term basis by its commune. The only people who employed wage labor for profit were aristocratic land owners or entrepreneurs. Even though peasants participated in and were in favor of the market economy, there was no way for great wealth inequality to build because of the mechanics of the commune system.
