Brooklyn is your most widely known novel because it's adapted as a film. It would be lovely to hear some of the words as they first emerged on the page. So why don't you give us a flavour of that story? This is alish in brooklyn, and she's getting letters from her mother and from her sister rose. These are the very first letters she's received having arrived in america. There was hardly anything personal in them, and nothing that sounded like any one's own voice. She lay on the bed with the letters beside her for the past few weeks, realized she had not really thought of home.
