The liberal impulse to liberate us from authority and despotism sometimes results in meaningful improvements in human freedom. The pluralist tradition sees subjection to state authority as the crucial site of unfreedom that we want to worry about. In order to prevent it, we want to build up sources of social authority that can meaningfully challenge the state.
