The city's politics reflected its economic structure, in part because the industrial nature of the city meant that there was a clear economic rational to the investment in public goods. The people who work at these companies live in the city and their backgrounds are not so dramatically different from those of their employers. Andthere isn't the same senseofa bifurtated city, as will come to later on,. where you have people working in very high income industries who are really set apart dramatically from the rest of the city.
