Scaling Laws - What You Need to Know

A model is like a giant collection of numbers and those numbers just like sort of store knowledge it has about the task at hand. Bigger models are capable of representing more sophisticated strategies they're capable of remembering more openings or whatever but they also need to see more experience to fill up all of those numbers. Machine learning theory says that that is you should expect that to be roughly linear so like if you need to fill a knowledge bank of 10 million numbers then you need to see like 10 million examples or maybe a hundred million examples. But recent empirical work suggests that it's actually sub-linear so it's more like it scales to the 0.75 or something okay so people don't really understand
