Introduction

Until the 19 sixties, the social sciences were dominated by men who typically ignored women. The patriarch was presumed to be universal and often attributed to biology or women's confinement as caregivers. Over the 19 seventies, anthropologyad archaeology became increasingly feminized and politicized. As these empirical studies blossomed, assumptions of universal male dominance were debunked and discarded. Gender relations were increasingly shown to be globaly heterogeneous.
