Vivaldi was inspired by specific events for the Four Seasons, and a terrifying hailstorm that destroyed the summer crops is certainly a possibility. This soliloquy for the shepherd is constantly interrupted by these tremors, but as each one dissipates the gnats and flies return. For modern violinists Vivaldi's writing is not generally very difficult. In terms of virtuosity this piece is eclipsed by dozens of other concertos; it certainly has its moments.
