The War Is No More Worth the Sacrifice
After the fall of Fort Fisher, Lee reported that dozens of soldiers were fleeing the army of Northern Virginia every night. Fearing imminent defeat, Confederate leaders made a desperate attempt to negotiate for peace. In Washington, D.C., the Republican-controlled Congress was taking steps to ensure that once the war was won, there would be a lasting peace. Their top priority was officially to end slavery.
