The cherokee are still reeling from the trama of removal, and they're deeply divided among themselves. Fearing even more violence in division, the chief at the time tries not to pick a side. Once the cherokee arrived in indian territory, those slaves were immediately put to work rebuilding the nation. That didn't last long. Some slave howning cherokee slit off and joined the south. Others owning tribes did too. Pretty soon the cherokees were surrounded with the union nowhere in sight. They had to pick a sides or be destroyed. So they joined the confederacy. Signed a treaty, the treaty of 18 66. A relatively short time later
