The History of the Separation of Church and State in America

The principle of separation of church and state enters American constitutional law in 1947, after World War II. The purpose of the first amendment was to allow the church establishments and the different kinds of religions in the different states to be independent. Even here in the UK, I think in America, what's sort of seems to get ignored is that even though there is a separation, philosophically, the foundational political texts are do have religious presuppositions.
