The Importance of the French Enlightenment in the Haitian Revolution
The Haitian Revolution was the largest modern slave revolt. The rebel leaders, especially Toussaint Louverture, made frequent reference to Enlightenment values of liberty and equality. James looked forward to similar uprisings in 20th century Africa.
