I like to spend a day or two at least just like hanging with somebody, getting to know them before you start filming. Man, the heart, the heart is the most difficult thing. I think because it's so uncontrollable and it's so much a matter of luck and serendipity is finding the story. When I made Shake the Dust, which was my first movie, I didn't know what I was doing at all. It really was supposed to be about dancing. And then I found out that he was doing a big show in Beijing without the sanctioning of the North Korean regime. So I waited nine years for that story waiting for that bubble to open up.
