The capital city of male is being rebuilt on rising land, reclaimed from the sea. The island will eventually house a tourist resort with about 80 guestroom s and an environmental science centre to study the effects of climate change. After hurricane katrina nearly destroyed the city in 2005, local governments invested billions of dollars into adaptation. But there were still major problems, including power cuts without weeks without power. Compared to the money spent on new levees or gates, it likely saved more than £1bn by building some 350 miles of levees. In new orleans they are not defeating climate change, instead they are preventing it.
