In Bat Gammon, there's a very direct way to take your opinion about a position and turn it into a wager. So the knowledge that Jim was gathering from rolling out positions could be used to play these propositions against other players. He probably could have played less if he'd been willing to play for bigger stakes. That is not Jim's style. I understood that if people were going to disagree with me and I was right by a significant amount, I'd make some money. Simple as that.
