What Was the Alternative Comedy Scene?

The alternative comedy scene was a reaction to the right-wing comics of the 70s. We were all basically very left-wing and so were the audiences. It grew suddenly from little rooms above pubs in the early 80s to the comedy store and junglers. And then Channel 4 was sniffing round, and they did Friday Night Live. So each week, a different comic would be plucked from obscurity and put on that show. I didn't really think any of us expected it to be a career at the time.
