Prussia had to put a huge proportion of its male population in uniform. With so many middle and upper-class men serving as officers, Berlin lost almost all eligible bachelors. According to the social conventions of the time, unmarried women needed an appropriate male escort for many social occasions. The fine young ladies of Berlin had little choice but to fraternize with the French officers or stay locked up in their homes.
