Giroud Price's Sentence Reduction
Giroud Price was released under an untested interpretation of a 2010 law that allowed Solicitor to seek a reduction in sentencing for prisoners who had provided substantial assistance. Two years later, he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Governor Henry McMaster ordered an accounting of how many similar sentence reductions had occurred in the past few years. A disturbing trend emerged: Judges had been sitting on motions to reconsider sentencing for years in some cases.
