A Novel of the Same Name

Alexander is their seventh son, regarded as a particularly good omen. His mother wants him to make the most of that privilege in seeking his fortune. Young Selkirk has other ideas and develops a passion for sailing. In August 1693 he is summoned to appear at a Kirk session but fails to attend. He gets into trouble with the church again - this time for fighting with his brothers. But elsewhere, a serious global conflict is gaining momentum. It will dramatically alter the course of Selkirk's life. The war of Spanish accession lasted from 1701 to 1714.
