Palliative Care for Patients With Advanced Illness
When the goal of medicine shifts from helping patients who are dying to helping patients to die, practices that render patients unconscious or that directly hasten their death no longer seem like last resort options. Such practices follow ineluctively from making the relief of suffering and satisfying patient choices, medicine's first principles. So why turn back? Why might we constrain palliative care for patients like LC to the traditional goal of medicine, namely health? Boundaries help to resist against endemic temptations.
