An american scientist called charles keeling began making meticulous recordings of the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Charles keeling had studied chemistry, but his great love was the outdoors. He would have to get up every three hours s during the night, to go and take these samples. And there is this well known story when he left his research note book out on the picnic table in early spring when it was very snowy.
