CHAPTER

Wind of Change by the Scorpions

Wind of change is a power ballod by the german rock band scorpions. The song was recorded for their eleventh studio album, crazy world in 19 ninet. Winder change was released in 19 90, not long after the berlin wall came down. Even to day, the scorpions are hugely populate. They're the biggest german band ever. But they also built a global audience outside of germany by doing a lot of international touring. It's a little weird, when you think about it. They're a band whose first language isn't english, singing songs in english for an audience whose first language is, for the most part, not english. I mean

Beautiful down there in the hills and they had these huge cabins that all the, you know, the boys would stay in and the girls were on the other side of the camp on the other end. I had a ball first year, I was there. The next year that I went, my brother was of age that he could go. So he came with, right? The middle, right? And they called my parents after about the third day and said, look, they said, there's something wrong because my brother had some issues when he was young. He had had some convulsions and he had some, I don't know what meds he probably on Ritalin. I don't know now what, you know, with the 50s, 60s, you know, we're giving kids whatever he was, he was an ADD kid, you know, became actually later classically flue jets. You know, he was a charter jet pilot and, you know, a really smart guy, brilliant kid. But he had his struggles, you know, and he and he wasn't taking his medicine. He had something he had to take. I can't remember what it was, and it made me sick at my stuff. They called my parents. They said, something wrong, something wrong around. I said, no, no, it's the other, it's your son's wife. You got to let him off the hook. He's miserable. He won't, he's worried to death. The other kids running around having a ball, you know, and he's probably not taking whatever he's supposed to take. But so that's what, you know, that's what you're living with when you said that the hero kid. And I read also that the firstborns will either stay very close to the family, or they leave and never come back. And I fell in the latter category finally. I kind of left, came to the west coast. Now I had a great relationship with my parents that until, to my dad's death, my mother's still alive. Thank goodness she's 89 will be 90 coming up in this next spring. But she, and I had, as I again, perspective from me over the years and growing to know other people. And I was, I was reading, you know, because I get your, your, your online letter. And the, what is it, the guest, the new book you're reading? Yeah, Emma Klein, the guest. Sounds great. Sam, fantastic, actually. Because I'm a fan of like, you know, Pete Dexter and, and the writing, because you ever read Spooner by Pete Dexter, he wrote Paris Trout and Deadwood. He wrote the book in the early 90s. I have not read it. Yeah, Deadwood is great. It's one of the most brilliant western descriptions of the old West that I've ever come across. They attempted it twice. The first one was Walter Hill in the 90s with, with Jeff Bridges. And they, as soon as I heard the title, I was like, okay, they missed the mark. They called it Wild Bill. And that's one foot in old school. Then the early 2000s, they actually did the series, HBO did Deadwood. Right. They got close, but it's still not the same visceral kind of element that, that Pete Dexter captured in that. And so my parents were, because you, you talking about the guest, and it was really interesting what you were saying about that kind of personality. And, and especially if you don't grow up within that, you know, and I had, they were lacking my parents, but they were never for a moment ever, ever malicious to any one of the three of us. And we knew every day they loved us. And I think back about the lacking of whatever, you know, and maybe not being held back a year, you know, and I probably would have done, you know, I would have been grown a little more, you know, what's the, is it in outliers where he talks about, or is it
