Stephen Colbert grew up just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. His family pronounced their last name, Colbert, the Irish way. Right before he headed off to college, Stephen Colbert decided to become Stephen Colbert. He studied theater at Northwestern University and had it in his mind that he was going to be doing sort of street theater Shakespeare.
