The Role of Roots in Differential Growth

In nature, nothing grows like, hey, now we all straighten up. If you have a population of cells and some of them rigidize or elongate and then rigidize, they will not all elongate at the very same time. So if one does it just slightly before the other, that's going to make a differential pattern of growth because I'm elongating first on the left, then on the right. The roots don't drill through in a straight line. They do obstacle avoidance. If they are encountering a rope, they will turn and then overcome it and keep growing. Most of the carbon that plants store is actually underground, not above ground.
