The Problems With Chronic Transfusions
In order to not have iron overload in patients with sickle cell disease or other chronically transfused disorders, we use iron chelation. Iron chelation is a way where the medication basically draws the iron out and you excrete it through your normal processes. But typically, the body usually just recycles iron in order to make new red blood cells.
