The Black History of Miami
Bahamians were among the first settlers in Miami. Out of 368 men who voted to incorporate Miami, 162 of them were black. Black people also had their own police precinct with black police officer in 1944 but segregation restricted them from patrolling white neighborhoods. The 1937 Memorial Day Massacre was a peaceful protest that resulted in 50 people being shot.
