The Importance of Intellectual Freedom in the Creation of the Soul
Origen was denounced by authors as varied as the Byzantine Emperor Justinian and the Latin Church father Jerome. Like them, he sees the salvation of the soul as residing in intellectual fulfillment. Erenaeus's intellectualism is also at play in explaining how souls fell away from God in the first place. To undo the damage, God himself must become embodied in the person of Christ and lead us to salvation.
