There are downsides and trade-offs to becoming competitively excellent and a goat in any field. There's certainly an acquired narcissism in some ways to some of these people. Athletes are especially ephemeral so they spend a lot of time telling themselves, "I've only got a few years to do this" But my argument is that you can excel and have a balanced life.
