The Lungfish and the Unicorn
Willy Lay was one of the grandfathers of what's now called hard sci-fi, where events are made to conform as much as possible to real science. He wrote a 1944 description of a three-stage rocket going to the moon, which helped inspire the Saturn V design that accomplished that feat in 1969. In 1941 he published The Lungfish and the Unicorn, an excursion into romantic zoology.
