The History of the Camels in the Southwest

The camels were used to survey a route for a wagon road from Fort Defiance in Arizona to the Colorado River. Horse traders in Texas feared that camels could put them out of business. There simply wasn't the supply of experienced camel ears in America like there was in the Middle East. Soldiers didn't know how to handle camels or their famous tempers. After the Civil War, the program was abandoned and soon after the completion of the US Transcontinental Railroad, Camels became obsolete.
