The Uneasy Relationship Between a Writer and a Long-Range Character
I was trying to stake out what you might call an extreme position, and then the second book I staked out a different position. So there was an element of saying, yeah, let's make this one extreme, and therefore that gives me the right to maneuver later. It would have been more difficult to start out soft and then become more violent later. There is tremendous joy in sitting down and writing a story, but having said that, it is also a job and it needs tremendous discipline. You can't sit around and wait for the muse to strike, because it never will. And so when we're sitting there writing that story, we are living that story. The power of imagination
