The Impact of Poverty on Psychosocial Outcomes
Poverty also increases barriers to accessing healthcare, like we heard in our first-hand account. There's a lot of difficulty in paying for and receiving treatment even if you can access it because it's expensive. The stigma associated with cutaneous lushmaniasis is so severe that women are substantially less likely to seek care. Even if it's treated, the mortality can be as high as 10 to 20%.
