The Dangers of Lighthouse's Methods

Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole tossed a coin to decide who would direct Hamlet in 1964. John Gilgud won, but he decided that his brilliant new concept for the play was no concept. No tights, good move, Burton hated them, no decor, nothing. The show opened on Broadway at the Lunt Fontaine Theatre after previewing in Canada. What became known as the Liz and Dick show thoroughly upstaged the play. It is now the subject of a new player at the National Theatre called the Motif and the Cue.
