CHAPTER

Conservation in the United States - What's Been Lost?

The main stream of the conservation movement in its early generations was focused on establishing protected areas and reserves to protect wild life from people. I think there's been just a lack of attention, or a lack of consideration, of the role of local expertise in the conservation movement. You can establish a national park and draw a boundary somewhere, but without the support of the people who live around that park, that park's not going to succeed.
