ECMO as a Bridge to Lung Transplant

The amount of ECMO as a bridge transplant has increased pretty dramatically in the last few years. Unlike patients with ARDS, patients who are started on ECMO pre-transplant generally do not need to concurrently be on mechanical ventilation. Because of this, using ECMO rather than mechanical ventilation as a bridge to transplant allows patients to maintain their mobility and stay awake.
