The National Alliance on Mental Illness is the largest grassroots organization of people who live with mental health conditions, parens and addiction. It was founded in 1979 by about 280 people who met in Madison, Wisconsin,. They had been blamed by their psychiatrists for their children's mental illnesses. The policy team at NAMI led a coalition of people to create a mental health response instead of a police response to mental health crises.
