What Was It That Betrayed the Labor Party?
He became leader of the labor party when it was still young party. He had this idea of a party that was not the political wing of the trade union movement, but which was a movement of opinion. It was going to be the replacement for the liberal party. That's how he saw its future, and arguably that's what he always thought that it should be,. right up to the moment they formed the national government in i 19 31. Inevitably, i suppose, he was branded a traitor. But i think a kinder and more generous appraisal would say that he was simply somebodywho failed in his own ambition.
