Psycho Killer is almost a David Bowie space oddity situation in that people now just hear it as a song. But at the time when it blew up, it was essentially a novelty song. The writing of the song predates the son of Sam killings in New York City but the song wasn't recorded and released as a single until like four or five months after Berkowitz got arrested. That's a huge part of how this song blew up. Also, Bon Jovi is at least partially this song's fault. I don't know if people realize that.
