The Importance of Political Engagement in Police Reform
The Royal Ulster Constabulary was deeply distrusted by much of the community. Following the Good Friday Agreement, when the RUC became the police service of Northern Ireland, PSNI, this was far more than a rebranding exercise. Its complete overhaul was based on 175 recommendations made by Lord Patton. It has stood the test of time extraordinarily well in nearly 25 years and has served as a template elsewhere.
