James's Catholic Loyalty to the Church of England
Anne and James had a total of seven children through the course of the 1660s but most of them died in infancy or childhood which was common only two lived to adulthood. So at this time the whole royal family and Anne Hyde are all firm down the line Anglican Protestants. It is evident that he began to take Catholic communion in 1668 or 69 and gradually stopped going to Anglican church services. His wife Anne died in 1671 and it seems as if this probably further sealed and cemented his resolution to remain Catholic.
