The Indo European Word Nepotism

In the original indo european language, the term was napet and it meant any male descendant other than a son. The word found its way into french and eventually into english after the norman invasion as nephew. But again, both niece and nephew were used in a more general sense. It wasn't until the 16 hundreds that the terms became restricted to their current meaning as a sibling's daughter or son.
