Anthocyanins in the Skin of the Tomato

The germ plasma of tomato has some natural variants where you can get purple skinned tomatoes. Some varieties like indigo rose and sun black have been produced by bringing in genes from wild species, which encode transcription factors that switch on and sign in biosynthesis. So we've done the same trick, but done it by genetic modification. We're able to make anthocyanins throughout the fruit so that there's really a lot more anthocyanin than in any integration line that can be produced.
