When the NHS was set up in the late 1950s, most people were dying of infectious diseases. The patient perspective is the thing we now need to build into the NHS and that's what I'm calling mission oriented goals. We spend something like 10% of our entire NHS budget on our failure to deal with diabetes. It's a question of value for me. I want a healthcare system that keeps people well and so reorganizes its resources and relationship with them to make that happen.
